City of Morgan Hill Public Safety Master Plan

As is clearly evident by the information provided in the preceding tables and figures, Morgan Hill is following the state and national trend of lower crime rates that began in the 1990s. More specifically, these data show that Morgan Hill enjoys a relatively low rate of crime when measured against the region, state, and nation. As noted, these data reflect crime rates through 2014. Recent changes in California sentencing guidelines will likely result in increased crime rates, particularly those related to property crimes. There are anecdotal reports throughout the state that such increases are already being noted. CPSM reviewed the unofficial Morgan Hill 2015 UCR data. The provided information reflects an overall 19 percent increase in Part 1 crimes. As defined previously, Part 1 crimes are the seven most serious violent and property crimes: murder, robbery, rape, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. This spike is largely attributable to a 40 percent increase (520 vs. 372) in larceny cases. Many other classifications saw modest decreases: burglary fell 16 percent (119 vs. 100) and robbery fell 24 percent (21 vs. 16). Again, these are unofficial numbers.
