Project Description This project has been established to fund several specific safety enhancements in the Downtown.

1. The project will support pedestrian safety by installing in-ground flashing lights at the intersections of Monterey/First Street and Monterey/ Fifth Street. These lights have worked well at the intersection of Monterey/Third Street since their installation in 2017. (FY 2018/19) 2. A license plate reader camera will be installed at the Downtown Parking Structure. This is a request that was originally not funded during construction of the structure due to funding limitations, however, the needed conduit was installed in the structure to make this component an easy addition. (FY 2018/19) 3. A median safety fence/barrier has been proposed by the Police Department to improve safety to prevent people from attempting to cross Monterey road mid-block. The design and type of barrier will be discussed and reviewed through the design process. (FY 2019/20) Project Justification The adoption of a Vision Zero action plan established a priority for increasing safety for pedestrians and bicyclists through engineered traffic safety enhancements. The license plate reader will support the Police Department in providing enhanced public safety.
