Police Special Operations (continued) Continue to provide a School Resource Officer and a Community Tobacco Enforcement Officer and look for new opportunities to work with the MHUSD to address issues such as vaping, tobacco use and distracted driving (Enhancing Public Safety; Supporting Our Youth; Maintaining Fiscal Responsibility) Conduct Run, Hide, Defend training at MHUSD and private schools (Supporting Our Youth) SRO to continue to assist MHUSD with Restorative Justice Practices (Supporting Our Youth) Continue to use social media to inform and educate the community of police activity and public safety announcements (Community Outreach, Engagement, and Messaging) Continue to actively participate in South County Youth Task Force (Supporting Our Youth) Financial Comments In FY 2020-21, the Department received a grant award from the Law Enforcement Tobacco Grant Program. The grant funds 1.0 FTE Community Tobacco Officer position, officer and MSO overtime hours for tobacco enforcement activities. The Department was among a select few applicants that received full funding request of $431,728 over two years. The grant term will end on June 30, 2023 and the budget assumes absorption of this position in future years. MHUSD will contribute $135,200 in FY 2022-23 (half the total compensation for a police officer position) and $140,000 in FY 2023-24 for one SRO dedicated to working directly on school sites. 1.0 FTE position will be reassigned in FY 2022-23 to a Traffic Officer from the Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT) Detective position. 1FTE position will be reassigned in FY 2023-24 to the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team at the conclusion of the Community Tobacco Grant discussed above. In FY 2022-23, 1.0 FTE Community Services Officer will be added in the Special Operations Division to serve as the juvenile justice specialist in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office, this position will also conduct community outreach and engagement, and support the day-to-day investigative functions of the division.
